MissionSquare Research Institute (formerly the Center for State & Local Government Excellence)

A Collaborative Effort to Strengthen Organizations Dedicated to Public Service

The Center for State and Local Government Excellence ("SLGE") was founded in 2007 by MissionSquare Retirement to respond to the challenges facing state and local governments as they sought to attract and nurture the best workforce for the 21st century.

In 2021, as MissionSquare Retirement became MissionSquare Retirement, SLGE transitioned to become a formal part of the organization as the MissionSquare Research Institute. The Institute’s mission is to promote excellence in state and local governments and other public service organizations so they can attract and retain talented public servants.

Since inception, the Institute has initiated numerous major research projects, conducted national surveys, and brought attention to future workforce challenges and opportunities in the public sector. That research has been cited in Congressional testimony, is often referenced by state and local officials, presented at professional conferences, and covered by the national and regional media.

We look forward to delivering the highest quality research that helps inform organizations that serve their communities.
